Steroid abuse is different from other drugs of abuse. The most important difference is that steroids do not trigger rapid increases in dopamine, which is responsible for “high” that accompanies abuse of other drugs. Abuse of steroids may lead to aggression and other psychiatric problems. Although many users report feeling good about themselves while on steroids, extreme mood swings are common and sometimes lead to violence. Some of the most dangerous consequences associated with steroid use include kidney impairment or failure, liver damage, and cardiovascular problems including enlargement of the heart, high blood pressure, which can lead to an increased risk for stroke and heart attack, regardless of age. http://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/drugfacts/anabolic-steroids
